English Language,” G. D. Bone brings out: “Tyndale’s task was
to make real the common life of the gospels. He was to
rediscover the parables. . . . Before they possessed the Bible in
their own language few people considered that a story in some
way acquired more weight if it were actually a reflection of
common life.” (82)
Implied here is the suggestion that the language of
everyday life when seen evokes the need for a literature of
everyday life. Print applied to vernaculars transformed them
into mass media, which was not too strange since typography
was the first form of mass production. But print applied to
Latin was a disaster: “The efforts of the great Italian
humanists, from Petrarch in his Africa to Cardinal Bembo, had
the unexpected effect of purifying Latin out of active
existence.” (83)
